West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville scores in Netherlands draw with Japan

The 2026 World Cup action continued on Sunday as Netherlands played out a thrilling 2-2 draw with Japan at the Dallas Stadium in Arlington. 

West Ham United’s Crysencio Summerville starred for his country, scoring a brilliant goal to put his side 2-1 ahead after the hour mark. 

The 24-year-old cut inside the area before sending a low drive past the goalkeeper. 

But Netherlands were forced to settle for a draw after Japan’s Daichi Kamada headed home a late equaliser.

The opening half of the highly anticipated World Cup match turned out to be mostly uneventful as both sides failed to break the deadlock. 

However, the game burst into life after the break, with captain Virgil van Dijk opening the scoring with a precise header after 51 minutes. 

Netherlands’ lead didn’t last long as Keito Nakamura struck with a low shot six minutes later. 

Summerville’s moment of brilliance put Ronald Koeman’s side on course for victory, but Kamada’s late header rescued a point for Japan. 

The West Ham star had never played a competitive game for Netherlands before the World Cup. 

Koeman not only called him up to the squad but also handed him a start against Japan on Sunday. 

Summerville repaid the faith of his manager by producing an excellent display. 

Apart from scoring a goal, he had 39 touches in the game, completed 86 percent of his passes and won 100 percent of his aerial duels. 

Summerville recorded five goals in 29 Premier League starts for West Ham last season, but couldn’t prevent the Hammers’ relegation to the Championship. 

Netherlands are now scheduled to play Sweden next weekend before their group game against Tunisia on June 25.
